Transthoracic Echocardiography
A transthoracic echocardiogram uses ultrasound waves to assess the structure and function of the heart non-invasively. It can be used to assess the size, dimensions and function of the heart muscle. It can also be used to detect holes (shunts) in the heart. In addition, echocardiography can be used to assess the structure and function of the heart valves. An echocardiogram uses Doppler to measure blood flow velocities, which can provide additional information on heart valve function.
